Dune: Part Two - Enjoy New Hollywood Film Review
Dune: Part Two may well be a defining piece of 21st century science fiction, but it’s not a perfect feel-good movie, especially the ending. If you’re not familiar with Dune, the vibes at the end might be a bit confusing. We should be happy that Paul Atreides and the Fremen win, right? Well, not really, but all those mixed emotions are part of the spicy cocktail of the Arrakis story. Like Frank Herbert’s first novel, the twisted genius of Denis Villeneuve Dunes: Part II is that although it’s structured like a hero’s journey, that hero becomes a villain at the eleventh hour In many ways, Villeneuve mirrors Herbert’s mind, maybe a little better than Herbert wrote it. Frank Herbert doesn’t want to be a white savior story, Villeneuve recently told Hoai-Tran Bui on Inverse. “He wanted to do the opposite. But for decades, there has been debate about how well the first Dune book delivers an ominous message. If Frank Herbert had tried to challenge the white savior narrative in the first dune, he might have done a better job," science fiction historian Alec Nevala-Lee stated in 2022.
