In the animated film “The Casagrandes Movie,” Punguri is a young demigod, eager to become a supergod. While her parents insist she is not ready yet, Punguari believes otherwise. The only way to deal with all of its power is to turn it into a mountain. Then, in the present day, we are introduced to 12-year-old Ronnie Anne. When he decides to spend his first few hours of pretend skateboarding with his best friend Sid, plans are different for his family a surprise trip to Mexico. Ronnie Anne’s extended family is as traditional as it gets: an overly controlling mother; happy, outgoing cousins; and common ancestors. The film pokes at commonly portrayed Latino tropes, such as an extended family crammed into a car/boat, and the use of “la chancla”.
